Tips for Maintaining a Custom Deck

Soon it will be spring, and those of us lucky enough to have a deck will start enjoying the warm weather. Unfortunately, many of us do not do a lot to maintain our decks, but there are a few basic maintenance protocols that will help you to make your deck last longer, be safer, and look better.
In today’s blog article, we are going to give you some hints and tips of what to look for and what to do for maintaining your deck.
Inspection
Take a close look at your deck in the spring when there is no more snow and the temperature is above freezing. Walk around on it. Look and see if there are any spongy parts, missing fasteners, broken or rotten boards that need replacing.
Paint
If the deck is painted, it will likely need repainting every year or every other year. Decks that are stained will last longer before a needed reapplication of stain. Before painting be sure to clean the deck thoroughly with either soft washing or power washing. Just be aware that if you are going to power/pressure wash, you have to be careful or the pressure will damage with wood. What is important here to remove as much flaking paint, mold, plant material, and dirt as possible before reapplying paint.
Consider Light and Heat
If you want to be able to use your deck more on the shoulder seasons, consider adding some more light and possibly a source of heat, like a fire table. Even a few solar lights will add some ambient lighting and are easy to install.
