Spring Cleaning Tips for Decks and Outdoor Spaces

As the days get longer and our temperatures start to climb, many of us are doing our annual spring cleaning inside and out. Your deck and outdoor spaces also benefit from some spring cleaning. In today’s blog article, we are going to give you our tips and suggestions for spring cleaning in your yard.

Deck

Now is a good time to take a careful look at your deck and see if it will need work later in the summer. Are there any fasteners loose or missing? Are there any boards that need replacing? Don’t try to fix it now in the rain, wait until the deck is dry.

Sweep off the deck and remove any debris. Check for areas to see if water is pooling anywhere. A drainage problem on the deck is something else to address when the weather is drier.

Check the deck for any damage over the winter caused either by cold or branches falling onto it. See if there is any mold on your deck that needs cleaning. Check the deck structure and see if anything feels spongy when you walk on it.

Yard

Any dead growth that you left over the winter can be cleaned up now. Perennials like daylilies can be pruned back. Check the perimeter for new sprouts of blackberry shrubs that need to be removed. These grow wild everywhere in our area and will take over if left unchecked.

Japanese maples can be pruned now before they leaf out. The benefit of pruning when there are no leaves is the ability to see more easily the structure of a small tree or shrub. Definitely prune away anything that is dead.

Rake out your lawn. Add well-rotted compost to your vegetable beds. Pick up sticks that have blown onto your lawn or into your flower beds.
