When is the best time to start a deck restoration project?

The best time to start a deck restoration project is when it’s warm and dry. That’s because stains and finishes, etc., need time to cure. So, anytime between May and September is ideal, when you can count on the weather being dry for longer periods of time.

How do you know if your deck needs restoration? Anytime you see cracks, splits or splintering; if it looks worn, old or faded; or if mould, algae or moss are gradually taking over. These are all indications that more than a simple cleaning is required.

If splits or cracks are bad enough, or if there’s evidence of rotting areas that are soft and spongy, a deck repair is necessary to return your deck to its original–and safe–working condition.

Deck repairs will need to be made first, including fixing loose boards, then cleaning with a power washer or strong, bristle brush. It will generally need 48 hrs (72hrs if the deck is shaded) of drying time before sanding, sealing or staining, and more time in between coats.

TREX composite decking doesn’t experience problems with rotting, splitting, cracking or splintering and does not require staining, sanding or painting. Restoration of this type of deck is simple and easy, using soap and water and a soft brush. For more difficult stains or set-in dirt, a pressure washer may be used but at a setting of no higher than 3100 psi and spraying no closer than 4” from the surface. It is possible to paint or stain TREX decking to deal with fading. Much will depend on the type of composite deck you have. A professional will be able to advise on the best method of restoration in specific cases.

Restoring your deck will return it to its original glory and make it look great again. It will also protect it and prolong its life.
