If you are considering replacing your aging deck railings, you may be overwhelmed by the many different materials and options available. Finding the right railings for your deck and deck stairs is not an easy task, but choosing the best materials may depend on personal preference. Here are some of the common options available:
- Aluminum
- Fir or Cedar
- Glass
Aluminum
Aluminum railing has many benefits making it an ideal choice. Properly installed aluminum railings have virtually no maintenance (aside from the occasional cleaning). They are also long lasting, potentially having a longer lifespan than the structure they are attached to as they do not rot or decay, do not rust, and do not crack. Aluminum railings are also aesthetically pleasing, giving you the option to choose a look, design and colour that you love.
Fir or Cedar
Another good option is Fir or Cedar deck railings. Wood has a timeless look, giving any deck a classic and unmatched appearance. Fir and Cedar do require more maintenance than aluminum, needing the occasional coat of lacquer or stain. Treated woods will also last for a long time, making them durable options.
Glass
Nothing says modern and sophistication like glass railings. One of the key appeals of glass railings is that they can be completely transparent, with no posts or anything blocking the view. This can really open up a space and make it feel larger. In addition, glass options can be very kid friendly; not having gaps between posts means nothing is getting stuck or going in between.
With so many great options to choose from, choosing the best material for deck railings comes down to personal needs and preferences. Aluminum, Wood or Glass options all have advantages and disadvantages. Talk to the Deck Experts to discuss your needs.
