What Are Lattice Panels and What are They Used for?

Lattice panels are those light-weight sheets of thin, crisscrossed wood or plastic that are typically used to allow vining plants to climb and have something to hold on to. But lattice can be used in other ways to add privacy to different areas.

Privacy

Even if nothing is growing on the lattice, the lattice still offers some privacy, because it’s hard to see through. If you allow vining plants to climb them, then your privacy is increased.

Where to Put Lattice

Many people put lattice against a fence to allow a vine like wisteria to cling to it. However, lattice can be used on a deck or patio to separate different areas, and to create privacy.

Lattice Advantage

One distinct advantage of lattice is its open shape and texture. That means that wind can flow through it, and your lattice is less likely to be torn down in high winds.

Other Uses

Lattice can also be cut in strips and used around raised garden beds to deter dogs from jumping into the beds. Lattice is not a perfect solution, but it’s an easy solution that is a good deterrent.

If you use lattice on a deck, there are plenty of perennial and flowering vines you can plant in pots that will cover your lattice from year to year with minimal maintenance. In the photo shown with this blog, this lattice is mounted next to a railing for privacy. It has Akebia, Lonicera, Clematis, Passiflora, and Sweet Peas (the only annual), all covering it and getting ready to flower.
