Incorporating Natural Elements Into Your Outdoor Living Room

Water

If you are building or rebuilding a deck, then you can incorporate a large water feature into the construction. The sound of flowing water is comforting to many of us and can transport us far, far away.

However, if you already have a deck or patio, then it is possible to buy a standalone water feature or build your own. Just be sure that the deck can support the weight of it. Water is very heavy. The simplest and cheapest solution is a bowl or small plastic bird bath filled with water and with a little solar fountain in it. You may even see some birds come and enjoy your water feature.

Plants

Plants and container gardening is a great way to bring nature onto the deck. A trellis over a container can serve as a privacy wall when vining plants climb up each summer. You can grow herbs which smell wonderful, flowers for visual interest, or even small crops like strawberries or cherry tomatoes. Adding plants to your deck will also invite butterflies and birds to come and visit.

Other

You can always furnish your little tables with rocks or seashells from the beach or river’s edge which will interest anyone sitting on your deck. A larger piece of driftwood would also make a statement. If you visit the beach, you can find fossils and sea glass which are also good additions to your bowl of goodies.
