How Does TREX Composite Decking Perform in Vancouver Winters?

Living in Vancouver, you know to expect a rainy winter season. Preparing your home for the rain requires lots of maintenance and preparation. If you own a deck made from TREX Composite Decking, this maintenance list can get a bit shorter.
TREX decking is extremely durable and stands up very well in Vancouver winters. Unlike wood decks which require annual washing and staining, TREX decking only requires basic cleaning with soap and water to be ready for winter.
TREX Composite decks, when clean, are far less slippery compared to their wood counterparts. Algae does not grow on TREX, but can on wood, which can make for a more slippery surface. Wood is also more likely to wear smooth in areas of higher traffic, whereas TREX textured finishing is less likely to wear. Snow and ice can cause the surface to become slippery, so you may need to do some simple maintenance.
Snow Maintenance
Vancouver does not get a lot of snow in the winter months, but there is usually a few days of it. TREX decking performs very well in snow, and is easy to keep clear. If snow has fallen on your deck, simply use a broom to push it off. If the snow is deep, you may use a plastic shovel. Avoid using metal shovels as this could scratch or damage the decking material.
Ice Maintenance
What is more likely to happen is that water may freeze and ice forms on your TREX deck. If this happens, it can become slippery and caution should be taken. It is important not to scrape the ice to try and remove it. Instead, using salt is a safe and effective way to melt the ice - just make sure to rinse off the salt when finished.
There are a number of benefits to going with TREX Composite Decking materials. With just some basic cleaning, your TREX deck will be ready to face all the winter can throw at it.
