How a Custom Deck Can Create a Cohesive Outdoor Space

A beautiful custom deck is a wonderful addition to a home, not to mention that it adds value and can also be a big selling feature because it is like an extra room for the home. But making the deck go with the both the house and the garden is what will make it cohesive and feel like it is an integral part of its surroundings. Cohesion requires some forethought. In today’s blog article, we are going to talk about making your deck cohesive.
Size
Size and scale of the deck are important, as well as access. There should be a flow onto to the deck from the house. The deck should be the right size, and large enough for whatever functions you need it to have, such as eating (and movement around a table) or cooking (and traffic around the grill.) The deck should feel like it belongs with the house and is not an afterthought.
Repetition
One common part of design is repetition. You can repeat colours on the deck that are also found in the house. You can do this with, for example, seat cushions or table décor or privacy screens. Colours can also be echoed that are found in the garden. So, for example, if you have red flowers blooming around the deck, then use some red accents on the deck, as well.
Style
The style of the deck can also mimic what is in the house. So, if the home is very sleek and contemporary, then you may want deck railings that are glass panels.
Cohesion is something that can be achieved by considering both what is inside the house and outside the deck area. Remember that you walk from the house onto the deck, but you are viewing what it is in your yard, unless you also have a bigger view beyond your property. If the deck is easily viewed from inside the house, then take advantage of that view when considering cohesion.
