The answer to the question in the title of this article is “probably.” The answer really depends on what type of paving stones you have and how they are installed. Below, we will go over the common types of maintenance required for paving stones.
Power Washing
If your paving stones have become dirty or covered in moss then you may want to power wash them occasionally. Of course, if they are laid in sand then they will get less dirty than if they are in the dirt. But an occasional power washing will quickly restore them to their previous glory.
Sand
If your paving stones have been laid in sand, with sand surrounding them, then over time you will probably have to add more sand. Be aware that there are several different types of sand at different price points. Cheaper sand will not bind together and will not prevent weeds from growing between the pavers. Polymeric sand is more expensive, but when applied properly, it actually binds together to make a solid and longer-lasting solution.
Vegetative Growth Between Stones
It is possible to weed between pavers and if you want to kill weeds, you can use boiling water or white vinegar or both. However, another solution is to plant/seed something desirable between pavers like thyme or clover or even pansies or violas which will crowd out the weeds. This concept means that you don’t have to fight the vegetative growth and use it to your advantage creating a walkway that looks and smells good.
