All decks should be designed and built with safety in mind, but there are some slightly different considerations when a deck is being designed for use by children. In today’s blog, we will talk about some of what you should think about when you are designing a deck to be used by small children.
Deck Surface
The first consideration is the deck surface, and by that, we mean it should be smooth. Composite decking offers a smooth surface with a long service life. Wood may start out smooth, but over time, it can splinter, crack, weather check, and fasteners can inch out.
Remember that children often sit on the ground. They also have a lower center of gravity, and small children run and fall. Having a smooth deck surface is very important if children will be on the deck frequently. This means that if you have an older wooden deck, be sure to examine it carefully each spring for any rough or splintered spots or fasteners that are not flush which can hurt a child.
Railings and Stairs
There are clear building codes that apply to decks which should obviously be adhered to. Professional deck builders will know these inside and out. But there are additional considerations for children.
For example, decks that are 24 inches or more above grade need railings (or steps). That means that less than 24 inches does not require it. However, a step riser is usually between seven and eight inches. So, a deck that is 21 inches off the ground does not require railings, but that is like three step risers, or quite a distance for a small child. For that reason, you may want to add an apron or shallow stair around the deck just because it would be easier for a child to navigate.
Ample Room
You certainly want an area where a child can play. So, while you are considering where adults will sit and socialize or where a table will be or where your barbecue or outdoor kitchen is, also consider where the child will be able to sit with toys.
