Are Concrete Patios Moss and Mildew Resistant?
November 26th, 2019 | by Admin Deck Experts | in Outdoor Living Space | 0Unfortunately, concrete is not naturally resistant to moss and mildew, and unwanted organism growth is a common problem for many concrete patios. Not only is moss and mildew growth unsightly, but it also poses a safety risk, as it can cause a patio surface to become slippery. If you have a concrete patio, you will want to take steps to remove any existing moss and mildew, and prevent future growth.
Cleaning Moss and Mildew From Concrete
If moss and mildew have begun to take over your concrete patio, the first steps are to remove them. Often, boiling water, a stiff brush, and a garden hose are enough to clean away most problems. Pour the boiling water over the moss or mildew, scrub it with a stiff brush, and rinse away the grime and debris.
If the moss and mildew are more stubborn, you may want to consider using a pressure washer. Just be careful that you do not use too much pressure and chip away pieces of your concrete. This cleaning method is often better left to an expert, but is a viable option. There are also chemical options available that can kill the moss, but these are often not environmentally friendly, and using water is your best bet.
Sealing the Concrete
Once the concrete patio has been properly cleaned and any old mildew or moss removed, you will want to have it sealed to prevent future growth. The use of a concrete sealant causes water to bead and be repelled. This means that water is less likely to gather in the grooves and cracks of the concrete, and without water, moss and mildew are less likely to grow.
Concrete patios are not naturally resistant to moss and mildew, but that does not mean they need to spend their lives covered in them. With proper care and maintenance, you can have a clean, and beautiful concrete patio. For more information, give Deck Experts a call today.
