Sometimes it is possible to expand an existing deck rather than build a whole new one. This works especially well when the existing deck is in good shape, and you just need more square footage. Here are our 5 best tips for planning a deck expansion.

Our first advice is to consult a professional. Decks have to be safe, and expanding an existing deck is not a simple project. Because of the need for knowledge of building codes and necessity for proper load bearing, this kind of project should have a professional, at the very least, consulting on it.
Codes
Be aware of local building codes that affect your jurisdiction. These codes will specify load-bearing requirements, railing and stair requirements. Codes will also determine maximum legal size of your deck within your yard.
Inspect What Is There
Give your existing deck a careful inspection. You need to assess if the beams and joists under the decking are in good shape and if they can be used or if a new underlying structure will be needed. Also determine if you want to try to match the existing decking or use all new decking.
Yard Design
If you change the size and shape of your deck, this will affect how the whole yard looks. Stand back, look, and think about how the new design will impact the overall look of your yard. Think about any landscaping that will need to be moved or added or changed.
