When people plan an outdoor space, one thing that is often overlooked is shade. Shade can make a big difference in how cool or hot your outdoor space feels. Here are 5 tips to help you achieve some shade in your outdoor space.
Exposure
If you are planning your outdoor space where you have none, then give careful thought to how and where the sun tracks in the sky. It is always easier to plan your space with some shade in mind rather than try to create shade at a later date. If possible, try to have some of your sitting area in shade in both the mornings and afternoons.
Umbrellas
When you already have a space that does not have any shade, one easy way to add instant shade is with an umbrella. Umbrellas can be standalone or they can be anchored to tables. Just remember to put down the umbrella if high winds are forecast. Your umbrellas will last longer if you bring them in during the winter, but even if they are left outside, high quality umbrellas will last for years. It’s also possible to get new fabric to cover the umbrella structure if your fabric wears out.
Lattice
Setting up some lattice or a trellis on one or more sides of deck or patio can add interest, privacy, and shade, especially if you take advantage of the lattice to grow something vining on it. Just do some homework and make sure that your homeowner’s association or HOA does not restrict your use of lattice.
Trees and Shrubs
Trees and shrubs can create lots of shade, but remember that deciduous trees and shrubs will drop their leaves. Don’t plant too close to the house either, which can create problems. If you don’t want to have to sweep or rake up leaves, then pick something that doesn’t drop leaves like a conifer or an evergreen Magnolia, for example. Before planting, think of what size your tree will be in five to ten years.
Arbour and Pergolas
Arbours and Pergolas are permanent structures, usually wooden, that are like open frames. They typically have posts in the ground, and one often trains something like a rose bush or wisteria vine to grow over them. The open frame itself will offer some shade, but if you add a shrub, then over time you can use the structure to create a substantial amount of shade. Furthermore, if you select a plant that flowers and is sweet-smelling, then you add other garden interest as well.
We hope that these tips above will help you to add some shade to your outside living space and cool it off for yourself and guests.
