3 Creative Ideas to Maximize Space in an Outdoor Living Space

3 Creative Ideas to Maximize Space in an Outdoor Living Space

If you have the good fortune to have an outdoor living space or “room” then you will likely want to maximize both the space and the function of the space. In today’s blog, we are going to talk about 3 creative ideas for doing both of those things.

        Railings

Not everyone needs a railing. However, depending on your jurisdiction, building codes, and deck height off the ground, some of us do need a railing for the deck. If you do need a railing, using a more contemporary glass railing will make the space feel more expansive because your eyes will move past and through the railing barrier.

A more traditional wood railing may look great, but your eyes will stop at the railing. This will make a small deck look smaller.

        Partition

You may wish to partition the deck, using pretty much anything to separate functional spaces. Even a combination bench and planting box could serve as a partition. Something to separate functional areas will make each individual space more functional and direct traffic, for example, to the cooking area (BBQ) or to the seating area.

        Yard

If your deck is quite small, then you could also use part of the yard to make additional space. For example, you could create a play area with a sandbox in one corner of the yard, along with some outdoor child-sized furniture. This would effectively add extra square footage to your useable space, and children would gravitate there, leaving the limited deck seating for adults.
